So I just talked to Vicky and we are officially no longer an item.
I think that this is for the best for the both of us.

Summer time romances

...they rarely last two seasons, I probably never told you about 'Cathy Richardson' from one of Uncle Mike's and my Lake Mathis Family Vacations (must have been "The Summer of '71", sounds like it could be a movie title)... this was before Mammau and Pop built the Lake house (with slave labor from Uncle Mike and me).

Oh boy another boring story to look forward to when you get back!

No, What! I won't make you wait thaaaat long - LOL. I'll give you the PG - Reader's Digest Condensed version

It was Cathy's grandparents that had the travel trailer. They all lived in Rolling Prairie, Ind. Her Father was a farmer and could not get away. The grandparents would bring Cathy and a friend of hers that was Uncle Mike's age along. Had a really good time with them at the lake - Cathy even talked her grandfather into staying longer since we usually stayed a month in the summer at the lake when we camped. We were really sad to part when her grandfather said they needed to head back to Indy. The next year, Mike was graduating from HS and instead of going to the lake, we were planning on to make a big West Coast vacation (Similar to one we did with Mammau and Pop on the East coast in RVs) Cathy and I kept in touch all year long, sending letters and pictures back and forth... if not weekly - never longer than once a month. This was before email and digital cameras, but not quite so far back into the dark ages - we did have a Polaroid Land Camera and the mail was no longer delivered by Pony Express - the mailman use to walk the neighborhood going to the front doors from house to house!

Anyway, back to the story... Cathy was suppose to arrive at the Grand Canyon a couple of days ahead of us cause were stopping a few places along the way (Painted Desert/Petrified Forest/Saguarro Nat'l Monument). I was so excited when we finally got to the Flagstaff area - I was probably bouncing around the back seat like a kangaroo in heat, with anticipation of seeing Cathy again. When we pulled in, I hopped out of the car and started running up the rows of camp sites looking for their trailer, but didn't see it right away. Meanwhile, Mom and Dad (Mammau and Pop) went to check in. I eventually came back to the car a little dejected. Mammau and Pop came back to the car, too. They came back with a note for me. My heart sunk when I saw the look on their faces - I knew it was going to be bad news. I figured it would just be a Dear John letter, but it was even worse than that. Cathy's grandfather had a mild heart attack shortly after they arrived and they had left just hours before we got there...we probably passed they on the way in from Flagstaff...
Don't know if you remember, but there is only one road in and one road out of that place... (but your were just one big scab, from the bike wrecks when we were all there)
Anyhow, we may have written once or twice after that and then the letters just quit coming in the mail box...nothing was ever really said, yet I had cooled on things as well.

Yet, it is still a nice memory of all the fun we had on the lake, hiking up to the observation point beyond the Ranger Station, roasting marshmellows on camp fires while playing guitars and singing songs and just being obnoxious teenages - loud and in love (we thought)

You will always have nice memories of the summer with Vicki.
However, Now's the time to go make some new memories - who knows when you'll be in Deutschland again!

Auf Widersehen,
Love Dad
